What are the child car seat rules in 2025?

We spoke to Kirsty Carroll, Showroom Manager at Kiddies Kingdom to get the lowdown:

1. i-Size: the latest car seat safety standard

“I-Size is the most important label to look out for, as it prioritises height-based classifications, requires rear-facing travel until at least 15 months, includes side-impact testing and is designed to work with ISOFIX systems,” says Kirsty.

2. Children should be rear-facing for as long as possible 

“You should keep little ones in rear-facing seats until at least 15 months old,” says Kirsty. “However, the longer the better. As long as your child still fits the seat (according to height and weight limits), then it’s a much safer way for them to sit.”

3. Make sure your child is protected in forward-facing mode

“When transitioning to a forward-facing seat, look for one with a high back or a five-point harness for added support,” adds Kirsty. “Remember, it’s always safer for your child to sit at the back, but if you’re thinking of placing their car seat at the front in rear-facing mode, make sure the passenger-side airbag is disabled.” 

What about a baby sleeping in a car seat?

Of course, your baby might doze off in the car (thanks to the gentle rocking motion and snug space), but keep these in mind when they sleep in their seat: 

• Car seats aren’t designed for sleeping: The Lullaby Trust advises that car seats aren’t suitable for long periods of sleep or to use instead of a cot, as their primary job is to keep little travellers safe. 

• Take your child out once you get to your destination: As soon as you get from A-Z, place your baby on a firm, flat surface to sleep. 

• Stop for regular breaks on long drives: Take your baby out of their car seat every two hours, so that they can stretch and move around. For newborns, it’s advised to limit journeys to 30 minutes at a time.

• Safety labels: I-Size car seats will have an orange label and a circled ‘E’ with the country code on. This will also include the height range and maximum weight details, so you can check if it’s suitable.

• Size: Make sure it fits in your car by contacting the manufacturer, testing it out in-store or searching for a brand checker.

• Side-impact protection: If the car seat features extra padding or energy-absorbing materials, then it will safeguard your child in the event of a collision.
