Can I eat spicy food during pregnancy?
So, is spicy food good for you? Can you eat spicy food when you're pregnant?
If you enjoy your food with a bit of a kick, the good news is you don’t have to cool things down throughout your pregnancy. Eating a hot curry or any hot dish with spices or chillies cannot harm your unborn child in any way.
The only thing it may cause or exacerbate is indigestion and heartburn - which some women are prone to when pregnant. You may well find that if you’re craving spicy food - the after effects of eating it just aren’t worth it. That said, you may feel no ill effects at all.
Spicy food to induce labour
We all know the popular old-wives’ tale that having a spicy dish can bring on labour for mums who have gone over their due date. But there is no real evidence that this is true, other than anecdotal tales by mums who swear it gave them a helping
hand. If it did, it might be more to do with the effects of spicy food stimulating the digestive system or bowel, which may then have a knock-on effect on the uterus.
When it comes to a pregnancy diet, the key is to stick to a healthy and varied plan with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also make sure you’re in-the-know about foods which should be avoided throughout pregnancy.
