Congratulations, you’re 17 weeks pregnant!
17 weeks pregnant is how many months?
If you’re 17 weeks pregnant you’re in month 4 of pregnancy; only 5 more left!
Your baby at 17 weeks of Pregnancy
The skeleton is continuing to harden, turning from rubbery cartilage to bone. The joints are fully mobile and are constantly being exercised. Body fat is accumulating around the skeleton and will continue to accumulate until the end of your pregnancy - this fat is crucial for your baby’ s body heat generation and energy.
Sweat glands are forming and the skin is still very thin and transparent. In the next few weeks your baby’s eyes will start to move from side to side beneath the still-fused eyelids.
Your baby is starting to hear sounds outside your body, and some may even make it jump – this is the perfect time to start talking to your baby. They will recognise your voice once they are born. They will also recognise other voices that they hear regularly, like your partner
The umbilical cord, your baby’s lifeline to the placenta, is thickening and strengthening.

Your body during week 17 of pregnancy
You may sometimes feel a little off-balance as your centre of gravity is changing, because your bump is getting bigger.
Hormones and milk producing glands are developing and these, with the increased blood flow, are making your breasts bigger. You may find that they will increase by one or even two, bra-sizes.

Blocked nose in pregnancy
The extra blood in your system may make you sweat more than usual and can cause congestion. If you are suffering from a blocked nose you may find that snoring becomes a problem – at least for your partner! A humidifier in your bedroom and a couple of extra pillows can help.
Around 17 weeks pregnant you may also notice that there are a lot of tummy touchers out there! Apparently now is a good time for lots of people to try and touch your bump; if you don’t mind, that’s fine, but if you’re uncomfortable with it, make sure you speak up.

Tips to keep in mind at 17 weeks pregnant
- A shoe with a low heel is better for your back than wearing flats. Avoid wearing high-heels.
- You may need to buy some new maternity bras to accommodate your growing breasts.
- When travelling in a car use a three-point seat belt and make sure the diagonal strap is between your breasts, resting on your shoulder, breastbone and over your bump. Place the lap belt across your thighs, under your bump.
- If your gums are continuing to bleed make sure you see your dentist
- Start chatting to your bump – it's a lovely way to bond with your baby. Your partner can do it too, and the baby will recognise both your voices after they have been born.
